Crime Stoppers Enjoys a Banner Year in 2019, Looking Forward to an even Busier 2020
January is Crime Stoppers Month and this year’s theme is “Creating Partnerships Against Crime”.
We are very proud to say that 2019 was a very successful year. In the spring of 2019, the Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers proudly and successfully hosted the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers Provincial Conference. The positive feedback from the conference attendees and support from out local police agencies was tremendous.
Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers ran a successful two-month Illegal Firearms Campaign and, as a result, several illegal firearms were removed from our streets.
The Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers also provided awareness presentations and formulated strong partnerships with St. Clair College and the Spanish community in the Town of Leamington.
We also formed a partnership with the RCMP, The Windsor/Detroit Bridge Authority and Michigan Crime Stoppers, in an attempt to prevent crime and encourage reporting of crime at the new Bridge sites (both Canada and US) during and after construction. New signage was designed for the project by the Bridge Authority and will be placed in strategic locations in and around the construction site areas. A Crime Stoppers presentation was also incorporated in the Bridge Authority’s training module.
In addition, three Provincial awards were won for Best Video Feature (CTV News), Best Student Engagement (St. Clair College), and best Special Project. These are just a few of the many accomplishments that took place in 2019.
Further, Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers have assisted the police and partnering agencies in solving a multitude of crimes this year, including robberies, homicides, drug investigations, traffic investigations and break and enters. We have surpassed last year’s figures by leaps and bounds. Below shows how the Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers has strengthened it partnership within our community:
Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that does not receive any government funding. We are able to run our program thru generous donations from the public thru fundraising events such as our Game Dinner, Spitfire Games (Chuck a Puck), Bail or Jail, Golf Tournament, Bingo’s, Shredding/Take Back your drugs events and grocery packing days (at the Zehrs on Lauzon Rd/Tecumseh Rd).
In April 2020, Crime Stoppers will celebrate it’s 35th anniversary in Windsor and Essex County. Operating as a non-profit charity, this program has been a valued partner of local law enforcement agencies and the media, resulting in over 6,800 arrests, more than $13,000,000 in recovered property and more than $52,000,000 in illegal drugs seized since it’s inception in 1985.
Crime unfortunately affects us all. Crime rates affect our feeling of safety and security within our homes, parks and even workplaces. We offer rewards for information to help the police and policing agencies solve crimes. Since inception, our Crime Stoppers Board of Directors have authorized over $1,000,000 in reward payouts. In short, the program works.
We cannot do this alone; we need the community’s support to help keep the program going and growing. Every dollar that is paid out in rewards must be fundraised. We are truly a community driven program that gives back to the community. Without the support of our local businesses and community members, we could not thrive as the successful program we are today. We are kindly requesting your consideration of a donation to the program to assist us in continuing to offer these services.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the generous sponsors, the strong support of our police agencies, the media for spreading our message, the community donations at our fund raisers and our committed volunteers for making us the best throughout the past thirty five years,” says Lina Busico, President of the board. “We would also invite everyone to come help us celebrate on April 25th, 2020 at the Caboto Club the success of our programme on our 35th anniversary. The amazing partnerships we have in our community have made us to be the best that we can be throughout our 35 years.”
Thank you again for your consideration of support to help make Windsor & Essex County a safer place for all of us.
